Yvonne, hailing from Sydney, started her fitness journey to conquer her fear of public speaking. Since 2019, she has mastered disciplines from Les Mills RPM to Reformer Pilates and Sound Bath practice, dedicating herself to curating an inclusive and dynamic experience.
Ayu, our trainer from Surabaya, Indonesia, commenced her fitness journey in 2008, gaining her Les Mills certification before proudly becoming the first certified Zumba instructor in Surabaya in 2011. Her deepest passion for dance and weight training has since seen her teach a variety of classes, including TRX Blast and FUZE – BLAZE.
Their multi-disciplinary expertise was put to the ultimate test when Yvonne and Ayu led their all-female team to a first runner-up finish during the HYROX race held earlier this year. Expert Q&A: Unlocking Effective HYROX Training
Q: What are the crucial foundational elements for an effective HYROX training plan?
Yvonne: “For me, HYROX is half running and half functional strength, so it’s important to train both. Interval runs build endurance, while burpees, lunges and sleds train strength under fatigue. On race day, I was thankful I had trained for the run immediately after lunges, because it made that transition feel far more manageable.”
Ayu: “Recovery and injury prevention are just as important as training. I aim for 6 to 7 hours of sleep, stay hydrated and mix in active recovery like yoga, foam rolling and ice baths. I always warm up and cool down properly, avoid overtraining and use the right gear. Giving the body time to adapt to both aerobic and anaerobic efforts keeps everything running smoothly.”
Q: What key strategies are vital for mastering the HYROX workout stations and managing the running sections?
Yvonne: “You really can’t focus on just one part; running and the workout stations are equally important, so pacing is key. Keeping your runs steady, using efficient techniques in movements like burpees and lunges and making smooth transitions all help conserve energy. During the race, I kept reminding myself to hold back on the runs so I could stay strong for the next station.”
Ayu: “To get the most out of your HYROX training, it’s important to focus on efficient technique for every station and learn how to control your effort throughout. For the running sections, smart pacing and a strong aerobic base make all the difference in staying consistent and avoiding burnout.”
Q: How important are efficient movements and energy conservation across all the HYROX stations in a race?
Yvonne: “Good form leads directly to better performance and fewer injuries. I keep my training balanced with yoga, Reformer Pilates, cycling, running and strength work; that mix really helped on race day, especially with core stability during lunges and burpees. Recovery is just as important, so I always prioritise sleep, hydration and active recovery to stay consistent.”
Ayu: “Efficient movement and energy conservation determine whether you finish strong or crash early. I always tell my clients to focus on efficient techniques for every station, treating each rep as a chance to conserve energy for the next run. Controlling your effort and minimising unnecessary movement is the key to maintaining consistency across the entire circuit.”
Q: From your perspectives as fitness instructors, what makes PURE a strong environment for HYROX preparation?
